A Homeowner’s Guide to Common Door Lock Types: Ratings, Security, and Compliance
Every external door requires the right hardware to protect your home and keep your building insurance policy valid. Many homeowners only discover their locks fail to meet policy standards after an incident occurs. Understanding the common lock types fitted across Irvine and Ayrshire properties helps you make sensible security improvements.
1. Mortice Deadlocks and Sashlocks (Timber Doors)
Found primarily on traditional timber front and rear doors, mortice locks are fitted directly into a pocket (mortice) cut out of the door edge:
- 5-Lever Mortice Deadlock: A dedicated key-operated deadbolt. Most UK domestic insurers require this to be stamped with the British Standard Kitemark (BS 3621).
- 5-Lever Mortice Sashlock: Features both an operational latch bolt (worked by a lever handle) and a 5-lever deadlock underneath, combining daytime convenience with evening deadbolt security.
- 3-Lever Mortice Locks: Intended strictly for internal timber doors. They do not meet external building insurance requirements.
2. Euro Profile Cylinders (uPVC and Composite Doors)
Euro cylinders are the most common lock barrels in Scotland, found on virtually all modern composite, uPVC, and aluminium double-glazed doors:
- Single Cylinder: Key operation from the outside only, commonly used on roller shutters and garage doors.
- Double Cylinder: Key-to-key access from both inside and outside the home.
- Thumbturn Euro Cylinder: Key access externally with an internal turn knob. Ideal for fast fire egress in accordance with BS 8621.
- Anti-Snap Protection (TS007 3-Star): Features sacrificial break points, anti-drill pins, and hardened steel bridges to counter lock-snapping attacks.
3. Rim Night Latches (Surface-Mounted "Yale" Locks)
Common on solid timber doors, night latches mount directly to the inside face of the door, operated by a rim cylinder on the exterior:
- Standard Non-Deadlocking Latches: Convenient auto-locking latches that can be vulnerable to slipping or carding if fitted without a secondary deadlock.
- Auto-Deadlocking British Standard Latches (BS 3621): When closed, the latch deadlocks automatically, disengaging handle operation from the inside unless opened with a key. This prevents intruders from smashing letterbox glass to reach inside.
